Healthy options when eating out
Italian
There can be more than 2,000 calories in one large pizza. That’s more than a woman’s recommended daily calorie intake
Go instead for a tomato based pasta dish like penne arrabiatta or puttanesca rather than a creamy carbonara. Most Italian menus also include grilled fish and chicken which can be great diet choice. Unfortunately, delicious extras such as garlic bread, parmesan cheese and the liberal use of olive oil can make a big difference to the calorie and fat content of meals, so watch out.
Chinese
Dishes from Chinese restaurants and takeaways are loaded with calories because a lot of oil is used most starts, like sesame prawn toast, prawn crackers, crispy wontons, spring rolls, crispy seaweed and ribs are dieting disasters as they’re deep fried and come in bite-size pieces, so it’s easy to keep eating to them. Clear soups are the best choice.
Crispy duck is a firm favorite, but the calorie content is high because the duck is served with its skin and this is the fattiest part. Best to fill your pancake with plenty of low-calorie cucumber and spring onion; add a small spoonful of plum sauce and just a tiny piece of duck without the skin!
Rice really does slash the calorie content of meals if you choose boiled rather than fried rice. A serving of boiled rice contains just 370calories; while egg fried rice is 625calories and special fried rice, which also contains meat and prawn even higher.
Indian
Many dishes are packed with calories and fat because large amounts of oil or ghee {clarified butter} are used.
Vegetable chicken and prawn curries are slightly made with beef or lamb and are a better choice. It’s often the rice sauce that boosts the calorie content so spoon as much of the meat and vegetable on your plate as you want but leave the sauce behind in the dish.
Curries cooked in creamy sauces are the worst kormas and Masala dishes for example, are made with cream and ground almonds, while pasanda dishes are cooked with cream. Swap creamy curries for tomato- based dhansaks or go for dishes as they’re made without a sauce or quite dry
Without doubt the best accompaniment for curry is plain boiled rice. Which contains around 370 calories per portion? Pilau rice has oil added to it and with 650calories in a portion it’s best to give it a miss. Same with the Naan bread- each one contains around 300 calories.
